Lions Come Up Short Against Trojans

LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University (1-6-1, 0-0 WCC) dropped the midweek game Tuesday against USC, 8-2, at Page Stadium.

The Trojans traveled across town and opened the scoring with an unearned run in the third inning. The two teams combined for eight errors on the day.

USC extended their lead with a three-run third inning. Quinn Lavelle finished the inning and ended his night with the three earned runs over four.

The Lions got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Diego Baqueiro led off the inning with a double to right and advanced to third on the Jared Thomas single. With both runners in scoring position and nobody out, the baserunners were each able to move up 90 feet on a USC wild pitch, scoring Baqueiro.

The Trojans added three runs late, including a pair of solo shot home runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

The bats awoke in the ninth for the Lions as Baqueiro led off with his third home run of the season. Thomas followed with a double off the Monster but was ultimately stranded at second.

Baqueiro and Thomas combined for six of the team's 10 hits. Cole Roberts added two hits as well from the nine spot.

LMU will shift focus to the weekend series against Kansas State. The Wildcats have been in Southern California since last Friday, playing three games at Cal State Bakersfield and one at Cal State Fullerton. The three-game series will begin Friday at 6:00 PM at Page Stadium.
