LOS ANGELES – LMU baseball picked up their first win of the season on Saturday night, setting up a rubber match on Sunday morning. The Lions (1-3-1, 0-0 WCC) responded after last night's series opener, topping the Bluejays (1-4) 11-5 in the second game of the series.
For the first time in three games, LMU did not score a run in the first, but did explode for a five run second inning highlighted by the grand slam off the bat of
Diego Baqueiro. The third baseman lifted a two out, 1-1 pitch over deep center to clear the bags.
After Creighton added one back in the top of the third, the Lions scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning without recording a hit. Patrick Start drew a 13-pitch walk, and advanced on a hit-by-pitch then wild pitch to reach third. A second HBP loaded the bases, and a third hit-by-pitch brought a run home. The following batter
Connor Blough earned a bases loaded walk to pick up an RBI and push the Lions ahead, 7-1.
The score line remained the same until the bottom of the seventh when
Cole Roberts hit a sacrifice fly to bring in a run.
Sam Biller followed as the next batter and homered over the WCC Tournament Championships signage in right field to pick up two RBI and extend LMU's lead to 10-1.
LMU gave up four runs in the eighth but got one of those back as
Jared Thomas hit LMU's third home run of the day with his eighth inning solo shot.
Creighton added two runs in the ninth, but a fly out to right ended the ballgame.
Matt McClure pitched six strong innings as LMU's starter. The sophomore righty struck out five and allowed four hits and just the one run to earn the win.
Michael Nunez,
Quinn Lavelle, and
Merrick Baldo each pitched an inning in relief to hold the game.
The final game to decide the series will be played at 11:30 AM on Sunday morning at Page Stadium.
