ST. GEORGE, UTAH – The Loyola Marymount University Lions Women's Swimming team completed the 2021-22 season Saturday at the PCSC Championships held February 16-19 at the Dixie State University campus in St. George, Utah. During the four-day competition the Lions competed against 13 other women's teams. LMU was led by sophomores,
Abby Shaw and
Heidi Ly who both made it back into the evening finals in all three of their individual events over the four days of competition while, also contributing to Top-8 finishes on four relays.
Day One Highlights: In the only individual event contested on Wednesday, four Lions scored in the 1000 freestyle led by
Lily Gallagher In 13
th and followed by
Anna Doherty in 20
th,
Ryann Dorris in 21
st and
Holly Prince in 23
rd. Doherty achieved a season best time dropping 12.65 seconds from her previous best and Dorris also swam her fastest time with a 2.37 drop. The 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays were also contested with the foursome of Ly (backstroke),
Kelli Andrade (breaststroke), Shaw (butterfly) and
Ashley Leaman (freestyle) placing sixth in the 200 Medley relay while
Natalie Hogenboom, Gallagher, Doherty and Prince combined for an eighth place finish in the 800 Freestyle relay.
Day Two Highlights: On the second day of competition, Shaw was the sole Lion making it back into a Championship Final (Top 8) placing 7
th in the 50 Freestyle with a personal best time of 24.13. Gallagher swam in the C-Final in the 500 Freestyle placing 23
rd, while Ly and Leaman added points in the 200 individual medley placing 19
th and 24
th. Shaw, Ly, Leaman were then joined by junior,
Sarah Lu, to place seventh in the 200 freestyle relay to conclude Thursday's finals.
Day Three Highlights: On Day Three, nine Lions made it back for a second swim in the evening finals in one of the five individual events being contested. In the 100 butterfly, Shaw placed 12
th in the B-Final with a season-best time of 58.22, while Leaman won the C-Final placing 17
th with personal best time of 58.83. In the 400 individual medley, two Lions made it back into the C-Final with Dorris placing 22
nd followed by
Sabine Caplin in 24
th after slashing over eight seconds from her season-best. Gallagher was the sole qualifier in the 200 Freestyle finals placing 24
th. Andrade took the blocks next placing 11
th in B-Final of the 100 breaststroke. A trio of Lions qualified for the finals in the 100 backstroke, led by Ly who placed eighth in the Championship Final, followed by Lu in 19
th and
Bebe Choroser in 23
rd. The final event of the evening saw Ly, Andrade, Leaman and Shaw re-teaming for the 400 medley Relay finishing in seventh place after dropping 2.11 seconds off their season-best.
Day Four Highlights: The final day of competition began with a celebration of the PCSC Seniors where the Lions celebrated their three seniors:
Sabine Caplin, Colby Mallet and
Lydia Zicker. Following the Senior ceremony, Ly and Choroser started off the swimming events in the 200 backstroke finals taking 18
thand 24
th, followed by Shaw in the 100 freestyle final in 19
th. In the 200 butterfly, Hogenboon captured 11
thplace while Caplin, swimming in the final event of her collegiate career, won the C-final for 17
th place while also lowering her season-best time by 2 seconds. Shaw, Ly, and Leaman and Gallagher, took to the blocks once last time to place eighth in the 400 freestyle relay. Shaw's leadoff time of 53.36 was another season best time for the sophomore, who also led all LMU swimmers with 44 points over the four days. The Lions battled with Alaska Fairbanks in the final relay to determine team placing and ended in the competition in eighth place with 402.5 points.
