Lions Win in Five Against Gaels

LOS ANGELES – The Lions defeated the Saint Mary's Gaels Saturday afternoon in a five-set match making it three straight wins for LMU.
 
Set one started with Saint Mary's getting on the board first. Two back-to-back kills from Rose Booth put the Lions up, 4-3. Saint Mary's followed with a three-point streak taking the lead from LMU, 11-9. The Gaels would go on multiple 2-0 runs toward the end of the set eventually increasing the lead by five, 22-19. The Gaels would win set one, 25-21.
 
The Gaels started set two off with a 4-0 over the Lions. A kill by Phoebe Awoleye put the Lions within two, 6-4. Midway through the set, Kari Geissberger had a kill that would spark a four unanswered point streak for LMU. The Lions would take the lead by one, 13-12. Both LMU and Saint Mary's would rack in some points and the score would tie, 17-17. At the end the Lions would go on a 3-0 run making the score, 24-21; and a kill by Geissberger sealed the deal to win the set, 25-21.
 
In set three the Lions went on a five unanswered point streak leading the Gaels by two, 10-8.  Later in the set the Gaels went on a four-point streak and took the lead, 15-12. At the end of the set a kill by Audrey Klemp, from Isabella Bareford, started a 4-0 run for the Lions putting LMU up by four, 23-19. The Lions won set three, 26-24.
 
Saint Mary's took the board first in set four. A block from Geissberger and Awoleye would tie up the score, 3-3. The score would tie four times at the beginning of the set until a service ace by Mary Schroll put the Lions up by two, 11-9, Halfway through the set the Gaels went on a four-point streak stealing the lead, 15-13. LMU would go on their own four-point streak, but that wouldn't be enough to catch up to the Gaels. Saint Mary's would win set four, 26-24.
 
The final set was close for the Lions and Gaels. A block by Awoleye and Klemp put the Lions on the board first. Saint Mary's followed with a 3-0 run and took the lead, 3-1. A kill by Rose Booth tied up the score for the Lions, 5-5. The Gaels went on a four unanswered point streak to and led the Lions by four, 9-5. Towards the end of the set Saint Mary's was up, 13-8, but LMU would go on a seven point streak to come back and win the set, 15-13, and the game, 3-2.
 
Bareford led both teams with 62 assists while Booth and Klemp tied with 20 kills apiece.
 
The Lions next game will be Nov. 11 against the Pepperdine Waves in Malibu, CA.
