LOS ANGELES – LMU defeated the Pepperdine Waves Friday night in a 3-1 match extending the Lions win streak to four.
Set one started with LMU going on a 4-0 run leading Pepperdine. The Waves would answer back with their own three-point streak trailing the Lions by one, 3-4. Both teams went back and forth scoring one point each until a kill by
Audrey Klemp, from
Sam Hastings, and an attack error by the Waves gave the Lions a two-point edge, 11-9. The lead didn't last long for the Lions. Pepperdine would go on two 3-0 streaks passing LMU, 15-13. Towards the end of the set, the Waves went on a six unanswered point streak taking the set, 25-16.
LMU got on the board first in the second set. A kill from
Kari Geissberger and a service ace from
Mary Shroll put the Lions up by two, 2-0. The Waves followed with a three-point streak leaping past the Lions, 6-4. It was in the middle of the set when LMU turned up the intensity. A kill by
Phoebe Awoleye, with an assist from
Isabella Bareford, sparked a 9-0 run for the Lions. LMU led Pepperdine by five, 19-13. The Lions would get the go-ahead and win, 25-20.
Pepperdine would lead LMU in the beginning of set three, 6-3. The Lions followed with a four-point streak taking the lead by one, 7-6. LMU went on multiple streaks extending the lead by five, 14-9. The Lions and Waves went one for one for the next few plays until two back-to-back service errors from Pepperdine made the score, 23-16. LMU would win set three, 25-17.
Set four was all LMU this game. A kill by Klemp put the Lions on the board first. Three back-to-back kills from
Jacquelyn Moore put them up, 8-5. LMU would go on another 4-0 run extending the lead by six, 12-6. The Lions went on another three-point streak extending their lead on the Waves. Toward the end of the set LMU and Pepperdine went back and forth scoring no more than two points each, but luckily for the Lions the last two points gave them the set win, 25-16, and the game win, 3-1.
The Lions next game will be Nov. 17 against San Diego in Gersten Pavilion.
