LOS ANGELES – The Lions took a tough loss to the BYU Cougars in a, 3-1, set Saturday afternoon.
BYU was first to get on the board in set one leading the Lions, 2-0. That lead didn't last long when a kill by Jaquelyn Moore sparked a 4-0 run. The Lions led the Cougars by one, 5-4.
Midway through the set, the Cougars went on a five-point streak leading the Lions by eight. LMU quickly answered back with an unanswered six-point streak of their own; but still trailed, 17-15. BYU ended up going on multiple runs increasing their lead and eventually won the first set, 25-20.
Just like set one, set two started with BYU scoring first, a block by
Kari Geissberger and
Phoebe Awoleye would eventually put the Lions up, 7-5. The Cougars bounced back going on a five-point streak and taking the lead, 11-8. A kill by
Rose Booth put the Lions within two, but the Cougars would go on another run making it, 15-10. Even though it was a close set with both teams racking in points, the Cougars would win set two with the same score as set one, 25-20.
Set three started off with a kill from Awoleye, with an assist from
Isabella Bareford. The Lions would go on a 4-0 run leading the Cougars by two, 6-4. LMU would kick up the momentum and go on another five unanswered point streak extending their lead by six, 11-5. It was all LMU at towards the end of the set three. The Lions would score seven in a row and win set three, 25-14.
In set four both teams went back and forth until a Geissberger kill started a 4-0 run for the Lions. LMU lead the Cougars by four, 7-3. The Lions held onto the lead until two back-to-back kills from the Cougars tied the score, 14-14. Towards the end of the set a kill by Isabelle Refell started a four-point streak putting the Lions up by one, 20-19. Both the Lions and the Cougars scored no more than one point each at the end, but it would be BYU who went on a 2-0 run and won the set, 25-23, and the game, 3-1.
Sam Hastings led both teams with 20 digs while Awoleye led the Lions with 15 points.
LMU's next game will be Nov. 22 against Gonzaga. It'll also Senior Night for the Lions.
