Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lions Fought Hard, But Fall to Pioneers

DENVER - Three Lions were in double digits in tonight's game against the Denver Pioneers, but that wasn't enough to bring home the win. LMU lost in overtime, 73-70.

Amaya Oliver had a silent 15-point game finishing 7-9 (77.8%) from the field for the Lions. Oliver also added six rebounds and two steals to her stat line.

Ariel Johnson added 12 points and Nicole Rodriguez chipped in 10 points for the Lions who shot 30-64 as a team.

Up by three at the half, the Lions would eventually lose their lead at the start of the third. Midway in the quarter, Denver would go on a 6-0 run of all free throws to lead the Lions by eight, 49-41.

The jumper by Johnson and two made free throws by Rodriguez put the Lions within two in the first few minutes in the fourth. LMU would make a comeback with five minutes left in the quarter going on a five-point streak.

A steal by Cassandra Gordon would lead to a three-point play by Johnson tying the score, 54-54. Both teams would go back and forth scoring until ultimately tying again and taking the game to overtime.

The Lions hit more field goals and had a higher 3 point% in overtime than the Pioneers, but it would be free throws that took Denver past LMU. The Pioneers were 6-8 in FT compared to the Lions 0-1.

LMU competed hard and fought until the last whistle, but Denver just had fewer mistakes which were the difference makers in the game. The Lions move on to 1-2 this season.

LMU's next game will be Friday, Nov. 18, against the Arizona Wildcats in Tucson, AZ.
