LOS ANGELES – The Lions defeated the Saint Mary's Gaels Thursday night in a 3-0 sweep.
Set one started off with Saint Mary's going on a 4-0 run, but the Lions quickly answered back with six unanswered points leading the Gaels, 7-4. A kill by
Jacquelyn Moore, from
Isabella Bareford, kick started a three-point streak extending the lead by five, 10-5.
The Gaels then went on another 4-0 run midway through the set coming within two of the Lions, 15-13. The Lions would go on a four-point streak making the score, 22-17. LMU would win set one, 24-19.
The Lions were first to get on the board in the second set. Both teams rattled off a couple points, but Saint Mary's went on a 3-0 run taking the lead for the first time, 8-6. The Lions and Gaels scored no more than one point each in the middle of the set. A kill by
Phoebe Awoleye would spark a three-point streak for the Lions putting the Lions up by one, 13-12. LMU then went on another 4-0 run making the score, 18-15. Saint Mary's came within two points of LMU, 19-17, but the Lions would hold onto the lead and take set two, 25-18.
Saint Mary's started set three with a 3-0 run against LMU. The Lions scored a couple points which would put them within one, 3-2. The lead didn't last long for the Gaels. A kill by Isabelle Refell began a four unanswered point streak for the Lions and put them up, 12-8. Towards the end of the set, the Lions went on a 7-0 run leading the Gaels by eight, 22-14. LMU would win set three, 25-16, and sweep Saint Mary's, 3-0.
Sam Hastings led both teams with 11 digs. Geissberger led both teams, as well, in kills racking in 14.
The Lions next game will be Oct. 8 against the Pacific Tigers at Gersten Pavilion.
