LOS ANGELES – The Lions defeated the Portland Pilots in a five-set match Saturday afternoon extending their winning streak to eight.
Set one started off with the Pilots getting on the board first. A block by
Kari Geissberger and
Phoebe Awoleye would put the Lions on the board, but trailed the Pilots, 3-1. A 2-0 run for the Lions helped tie LMU up with Portland, 8-8. Both the Pilots and Lions went on back-to-back three-point streaks. With those runs the score would tie again, 10-10. Midway through the set the Pilots lead the Lions by four, 22-18, but LMU would answer back and be within one of Portland, 22-21. The Lions couldn't hold on and would lose set one, 25-22.
The Lions led the Pilots at the beginning of set two. A kill by
Jacquelyn Moore and a service ace by
Rose Booth put LMU up, 7-6. Portland would follow with four unanswered points taking the lead and leading LMU, 10-7. The Lions regained the lead thanks to three back-to-back kills from Moore, Booth and Geissberger. The Lions would have a two-point edge, 18-16. At the end of the set the Lions went on a 4-0 run and ending up winning set two, 25-20.
Set three was a close one for the Lions. Portland went on two 4-0 runs and led LMU by six, 16-10. A kill by Awoleye would spark a six-point streak for or the Lions and tie up the score, 22-22. Two kills from Geissberger put the Lions up by one, 24-23. It would be back-to-back kills from Klemp and Awoleye that would give LMU set three, 26-24.
The Pilots opened the fourth set in this match, but it would be LMU who racked in four straight points leading, 4-1. The Lions went on another 4-0 run stretching the lead by four, 8-4. That lead didn't last long when the Pilots went on seven unanswered point streak taking the lead from the Lions, 11-8. LMU would come within one of the Pilots, 18-17, thanks to a Geissberger kill. At the end of the set the Pilots gained a couple of points and took the set, 25-21.
LMU would go on multiple streaks at the beginning of set five. A kill by Booth, from
Sam Hastings, put the Lions up by five, 8-3. The Pilots scored a few points here and there, but it would be the Lions who would win set five, 15-7, and win the game, 15-7.
The Lions next match will be Oct. 27 against San Francisco Dons at Gersten Pavilion.
