LONG BEACH, Calif. - The LMU Women's team opened their 2022-23 season Saturday at the PCSC Pentathlon in Long Beach.
Swim team members selected one of three pentathlons to compete in. The most popular event was the 'Sprint' Pentathlon consisting of a 50-yard race in each of the four strokes and a 100 Individual Medley. Six Lions placed among the top-12 in the event, led by junior (transfer)
Maddie Nguyen, who was the overall winner after recording the lowest cumulative time in the five races. Nguyen placed first overall in both the 50 butterfly and 50 back, and fourth in both the 50 free and 100 IM. Following Nguyen was junior
Heidi Ly in third place, freshman
Lia Murray in sixth place, senior
Kelli Andrade in ninth place, freshman
Lauren Kim in 11
th place and sophomore Francis Dygean in 12
th place.
Only two freshmen represented LMU in the "Long Individual Medley" Pentathlon with
Grace Hull capturing eight place in the 100 butterfly.
In the Freestyle Pentathlon consisting of a 25yd, 50yd, 100yd, 200yd and 500yd races, several Lions posted strong early season times while placing in the top-10 in the individual freestyle events. Junior
Abby Shaw took fourth in the 25 sprint and seventh in the 100 yd race out of 74 competitors in the event. Freshman
Rei Sperry captured eighth place in the 200 freestyle, while sophomore
Natalie Hogenboom recorded a strong early season time in the 500 freestyle with a sixth place finish.
Due to some technical difficulties with the interface with a new Omega timing system at the pool, full results are not yet available but will be posted up once received.
The Lions return to the water next Friday and Saturday in Pepperdine's Rodionoff Invitational where they will face off against WCC opponents Pepperdine and University of San Diego over the two-day competition.
