Lions Defeat No. 20 Pepperdine

LOS ANGELES – The LMU women's volleyball defeated the Pepperdine Waves in a 3-1 match Friday night.
 
Set one started with the Waves taking the first two points. Pepperdine would go on two 2-0 runs leading LMU, 6-2. A kill by Phoebe Awoleye started a four-point streak for the Lions and would tie up the score, 10-10. LMU would go on another 5-0 run taking the lead, 20-16, and winning set one, 25-22.
 
Pepperdine opened set two with a 3-0 run leading LMU. An Audrey Klemp kill would put the Lions on the board, 3-1. Both teams would score a couple points here and there, but LMU would still trail by one, 10-9. Towards the end of the set the Lions would go on a two-point streak and tie the score, 18-18. Pepperdine would follow with a four unanswered point streak and take the set, 25-20.
 
Set three was a close one for the Lions. Pepperdine got on the board first, but LMU would go on five-point streak and take the lead, 5-2. The Waves would answer back with three points tying the score, 6-6. LMU went on multiple 2-0 streaks midway through the set, but a kill from Booth would put the Lions up five, 19-14. At the end of the set, Pepperdine would go on a four unanswered point streak, but would still fall short to LMU, 25-23.
 
Both the Lions and Waves would score no more than one point each in the beginning of set four. A kill by Moore tied up the score for the Lions, 6-6.  A kill by Booth, from Isabella Bareford, gave LMU the edge by two leading the Waves, 12-10. Midway through the set the Lions went on a 3-0 run extending their lead, 17-14. Pepperdine would rack in two points from back-to-back kills tying the score again, 18-18. Three unanswered points at the end of the set for LMU would give the Lions the lead to win the set, 25-22, and win the game, 3-1.
 
Bareford led both teams with 46 assists. Sam Hastings also led both teams in digs with 14.
 
The Lions next match will be Oct. 20 against Gonzaga in Spokane, WA.
