Lions Struggle From the Field Continues

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - After a relatively evenly matched contest through the first 20 minutes, the LMU Lions ended up falling to the San Francisco Dons 49-70. It was an afternoon when the Lions could not find their shot, shooting just 23% from the field.

The woes were exacerbated by the Dons' dominance in the paint and off the bench, outscoring the Lions 36-8 inside and 28-6 off the bench.

Both squads started ice-cold from the field, with the Dons scoring the only bucket through the first four and a half minutes.

With 5:35 to go in the first, the Lions found their groove, with Ariel Johnson converting from the line and on a fast break. Kimora Sykes pushed the Lions' run to 7-0 on a dagger from downtown.

The Dons answered with a 5-0 run of their own, but both teams ended the quarter trading bucket-for-bucket, leaving the score knotted up at 14 apiece.

A flurry of buckets came from the line to start the second, keeping the score tied through the first three minutes. However, the next seven minutes saw only one bucket for LMU, a three from Johnson.

The cold quarter for the Lions was not for a lack of trying, as the Lions put up 14 shots in the second, but only knocked down one. The struggle sent the Lions into the locker room down 21-31.

Cassandra Gordon began to find her footing in the third, hitting one of the Lions' ten threes of the afternoon. Johnson followed with one of her own, but the Dons could not be stopped, storming out on a 14-0 run over a three-minute span.

Johnson added to her team-high 18 points with another three, followed by a pair of triples from Nicole Rodriguez and Alexis Mark, pushing the Lions to their highest shooting percentage of the game at 33 percent. Despite the nine quick points, the Lions were still outscored 15-25 in the third.

Dons freshman guard, Jasmine Gayles, dominated the offense, scoring a game-high 20 points, including eight in the final period.

One last push was made in the fourth quarter, with Jasmine Jones powerfully drawing an and-one and Sykes converting twice from downtown. The glimmers of hope would not be enough to bounce back from the double-digit deficit, and the Dons handed the Lions their fifth loss in conference play.

Johnson finished with a team-high 18 points, eight boards, and was the only Lion to score in double figures.

The Bay Area road trip comes to a close and the Lions will get set for another three-game week, starting on Tuesday with a rescheduled matchup against Pepperdine. The PCH Cup rivalry game can be seen on the WCC Network, with tip-off from Malibu slated for 7 p.m.
