Lions Push for Comeback, but Valiant Effort Falls Short

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The LMU Women's basketball team dropped their first of two games in the Bay Area, falling to the Santa Clara Broncos 51-62 on Thursday night.

From the tip, the Broncos led and controlled the offense, getting out to an early 4-0 lead.

Nicole Rodriguez took the lid off the bucket for the Lions, knocking down a three. Rodriguez would quickly be backed up by Ariel Johnson, hitting a jumper of her own to give the Lions a 5-4 advantage.

Other than three free throws, the bucket from Johnson with 6:23 remaining in the quarter would be the final field goal for the Lions in first. At the break, LMU trailed 8-15.

The Broncos stormed out on a 7-0 run to start the second quarter, but the Lions answered with a 7-2 run of their own, five of which coming from Rodriguez.

The Lions held the Broncos to just one jumper in the last five minutes of the second, but could not stop the home team from the line. The Broncos went a perfect seven-for-seven at the charity stripe, giving Santa Clara a 33-21 lead midway through the contest.

The tables flipped to start the third, with the Lions scoring the first four points and the Broncos scoring the next five. Alexis Mark came alive, notching seven of the Lions' 13 points in the quarter. Mark took two turnovers to the cup and converted a three-point-play, giving a much-needed energy to the squad.

Santa Clara's, Lindsey Van Allen, went on an 8-0 run of her own in the span of a minute, a dagger to the comeback the Lions had built. With ten minutes to go, the Lions' deficit had grown to 16.

The Lions brought a new energy, fight, and determination to the fourth quarter. They outscored the Broncos 17-to-12 and notched their highest scoring quarter of the night. They took care of the ball, recording zero turnovers in the final period.

Kimora Sykes hit the first bucket of the fourth, but both teams went cold for the next five minutes, only scoring from the line. With five minutes to go, the Lions began to chip away at the Broncos' 16 point lead.

Possession after possession, the Lions squad found ways to make stops and get buckets, closing the game on a 15-6 run. It was an all-around effort with points coming from Aspyn Adams, Johnson, Mark, Rodriguez, and Sykes.

The valiant effort was not enough to close the lead the Broncos built, but showed tremendous promise for what the Lions can bring to the court.

Now 0-4 in conference play, the Lions will look to carry their fourth quarter momentum up the coast to San Francisco, where they will meet the Dons on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game can be streamed on the WCC Network.
