Opening Week of Conference Play Comes to a Close for Lions

LOS ANGELES - The Lions closed out their opening week of conference play on Saturday, falling to the #18 BYU Cougars, 37-77.

The Cougars are a known powerhouse not only in the WCC but across the nation as well. Coming off of a run to the Sweet 16 last season, the Cougars have proved early that they are poised to make a return to the tournament.

Right from the tip, the Lions were running step for step with the Cougars. Khari Clark sprung off the bench to convert the Lions' first six points of the game. Her power in the paint seemed to be unstoppable through the first seven minutes.

With three minutes to go in the first, sharpshooter Aspyn Adams hit a deep fade-away three to ignite the crowd and bring the Lions within five. Adams would convert another long-range dagger near the end of the first, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars closed out on a 12-3 run and lead 26-12 after one.

The second quarter was controlled by the Cougars from start to finish. BYU doubled up the Lions, scoring 18 points in the quarter. Ariel Johnson knocked down her lone bucket of the game, a triple, with a minute remaining in the second, giving a bit of life to a tired Lion squad.

Eliza Joynes saw valuable minutes as well and capitalized. The freshman scored four points on 2-3 shooting, grabbed three rebounds, and even corralled a steal.

Turnovers plagued the Lions in the first half and BYU made them pay, with 21 of the Cougars 44 points coming off of turnovers. At the half, BYU lead 44-21.

The third quarter set the Lions back as the Cougars held them to just seven points. A three from Nicole Rodriguez as well as a pair of buckets from Alexis Mark and Kimora Sykes was all the Lions could convert. After 30 minutes of action, BYU had just about closed the door with a 36 point lead.

Both squads used the fourth quarter to get some younger players on the court. At one point, only one upperclassman remained in action, giving the fans in Gersten a glimpse at what is to come down the road for both programs.

The Lions finish week one of conference play 0-3, but will look to bounce back next week with another trio of games to start a long four-game road trip. The action kicks off with a PCH Cup rivalry matchup at Pepperdine on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. PST and the game can be seen on the WCC network.
