Lions Struggle to Find Footing Under Pressure From Toreros

LOS ANGELES - The LMU women's basketball team fell in their home conference opener, 48-80, to the veteran led San Diego Toreros.

The Toreros, known for their full-court pressure, brought it from the first possession, but Ariel Johnson found her way to a dagger from downtown to start the scoring for the Lions.

Johnson continued to dominate on the offensive end, scoring 11 of the Lions' 15 points in the first quarter. The Toreros went cold midway through the quarter, opening the door for the Lions to close the gap.

With four minutes to go in the first, the Toreros opened up the scoring once again, ending the quarter on a 12-3 run.

The second quarter was a near mirror image of the first, as San Diego got out to a hot start, but stalled near the six-minute mark. Eliza Joynes brought the bench to their feet when she ran the length of the court to put her first collegiate bucket home.

Once again, the Toreros ended the quarter on a double-digit run, setting the Lions back 28-44 headed into the locker room.

The third quarter brought a promising run, started by Khari Clark. The Lions' 10-3 run through the middle of the third gave the Gersten faithful a chance to show their squad some love, but San Diego was quick to right the ship and jump back out to an 18 point lead by the end of the quarter.

San Diego carried their momentum right into the fourth quarter and continued to pile the pressure on each possession. Their press and lockdown defense held the Lions to just eight points in the final quarter and handed the Lions their second WCC loss of the year.

The Lions will look to bounce back on Saturday when they face the top squad in the WCC, the BYU Cougars. The game will tip-off at 2 p.m. PST and can be seen on the WCC Network.
