Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Brendan Craig

Lions Storm Back in Third Quarter, but Gales Three Ball too Strong

MORAGA, Calif. - The LMU Women's basketball team kicked off a three-game week with their conference opener at Saint Mary's, where they fell 63-80.

The first quarter played out like a tight conference battle. Both squads traded blows and kept the score within a couple of possessions through the first 10.

Aspyn Adams got the Lions going from behind the arc, knocking down the first of her two triples. Cassandra Gordon soon got in on the long-range action too, bringing the Lions within three.

The second quarter turned the tables in the game and belonged to the Gales. Out of the gate, Saint Mary's erupted on a 13-2 run that shook up the Lions' flow. With just two points through the first five minutes, the Lions could not seem to find their footing.

With both teams going scoreless for the next two minutes, the Lions were able to slow the bleeding and head into the locker room down 22-41.

The tides drastically turned in the third as the Lions fought possession by possession on both ends of the floor to bring the game back within reach. Through the first seven minutes, the Lions held the Gales to just five points.

On the back of Nicole Rodriguez and Kimora Sykes, the Lions mounted a 15-5 run, bringing the Gales lead back down to single digits. Alexis Mark controlled the paint to close the third, drawing a foul and scoring two straight buckets.

Ariel Johnson closed the quarter by diving to the floor to disrupt the Gales offense. The hustle play led to a Saint Mary's shot clock violation and a standing ovation from the bench. The senior quietly dropped 16 points on the night, good for the team lead.

The Lions' dominant third quarter brought the game back within reach as they trailed by only 10, with 10 minutes to go.

Momentum was riding on the Lions' side into the fourth, but the Gales three-point shooting came back to life, halting the Lions' progress. Saint Mary's would finish the game with 13 threes, six of which came from sharp shooter, Taycee Wedin.

Hope was still alive as the Lions converted a couple quick shots, but with five minutes to go, the Gales sealed the game on a 12-4 run.

The Lions week will not end here as they get set to host two big conference games against San Diego and BYU on Thursday and Saturday respectively. Both games can be seen on the WCC Network and tickets can be purchased at LMULions.com.
