LOS ANGELES – The LMU women's soccer team had to play from behind again on Thursday night in front of their home crowd. The Lions (0-5) scored a second half penalty kick to make the finish close before ultimately dropping the match to UC Irvine (3-2), 3-1.
Both teams recorded four shots in the first half, but UCI did go ahead on a 17
th minute goal.
The score remained 1-0 through halftime and into the first nine plus minutes of the second half until the 'Eaters scored a second goal.
Wasting no time, LMU played a long ball later in the 55
th minute to
Makiya Christensen into the box to put the pressure on the defense. All it took was one touch by Christensen and the freshman was tripped inside the 18, forcing a penalty kick. Christensen took her own PK and buried it to make it a 2-1 game.
With LMU pushing for the equalizer, UCI scored a late third goal in the 82
nd minute to make it a 3-1 final.
Kendyll Humphreys made a season-high five saves in goal for the Lions.
The Lions will return to Sullivan Field on Sunday afternoon for a crosstown showdown with #4 UCLA. The game will kick off at 1pm and serve as the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team to follow.
