No. 11 Lions Win Shootout over Highlanders

RIVERSIDE, CA – The No. 11 Loyola Marymount University Lions (5-0-1) gave up a goal early but got three-straight scores and held on late for a 3-2 win over UC Riverside on Sunday night.

CJ Neville made his presence felt in his first action of the season by scoring a pair of goals. Neville, scored the game-tying goal in the 39th minute with his shot sailing to the high right part of the net, getting past the Highlanders goalkeeper.

His second goal in the 51st minute turned out to be the eventual game-winner. He sent a booming shot to the lower left of the net, again getting past the Highlanders keeper, giving the Lions a lead, they wouldn't relinquish.

Narciso Cervantes was all over the pitch tonight, scoring a goal in the 43rd minute, his third score of the week, and leading LMU in shots with six and shots on goal with two.

Jacob Jackson got the start in net for the Lions and had four saves on the night, none bigger than his save in the 66th minute when he turned away the penalty kick attempt by UC Riverside. His PK save turned out to be the difference in the Lions picking up their fifth win of the season.

LMU held the advantage in shots 17-12, saves 4-3, and were tied with UCR in shots on goal at six.

The Lions return to the pitch on Friday, September 17th when they travel to Santa Barbara and play UCSB with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
