LOS ANGELES – Despite trailing 3-0 heading into the final quarter hour of play, LMU women's soccer showed heart and determination to make it a game once again. In Thursday night's home opener against UC Riverside (2-0-0), LMU scored twice in the final fifteen minutes to turn a 3-0 deficit into a 3-2 final.
The Lions proved all night to have chances, earning five more corner kicks than the Highlanders and outshooting UC Riverside, 19-8.
UC Riverside scored a goal in the 13
th minute and looked to push ahead 2-0 before the lines ref reversed a goal call in the 26
th minute to keep the score line the same heading into the half.
After the Highlanders scored goals in the 54
th minute and the 74
th minute to push ahead, LMU was quick to respond.
Sydney Schultz collected her own missed shot rebound and found the back of the net to give life back to the Lions less than two minutes after the visitors scored.
With LMU pressing forward,
Madison Thomas used her speed to fly by the defenders and score her first of the year in the 84
th minute.
LMU continued to apply pressure in the game's closing minutes, and despite outshooting UCR in the second half 14-5, could not get the equalizer to go in.
The Lions will quickly turn back around with a flight to Seattle to play Washington on the Pac-12 Networks Sunday at noon. The Huskies are receiving votes in the latest Coaches Top 25 Poll
