ANNAPOLIS, MD – The 2021 women's soccer season officially kicked off on Thursday evening, as LMU (0-1) and Navy (1-0) met just a few months after the conclusion of last year's spring season.
Navy capitalized on a free kick outside the box for the season-opening goal, scoring off the set piece with a header in the box less than seven minutes into the game.
Quick to respond, LMU scored the equalizer 44 seconds later as
Sadie Dunphy found her sister
Sierra Dunphy on a cross to the box.
The Mids came out quickly to open the second half as well, capitalizing on a foot error to push ahead with a goal in the 49
th minute. LMU made the goalkeeper change at intermission, with
Kendyll Humphreys playing the opening 45 minutes and
Sadie Kenny coming on for the second half.
LMU had opportunities in both halves, earning nine of the game's 11 corner kicks. The Lions also outshot Navy 12-9 in the contest and forced Navy offsides seven times.
The Lions will stay east to continue this opening road trip. LMU will face 11
th-ranked Georgetown on Sunday for a 1 p.m. local time start in Washington D.C.
