MORAGA – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (18-28, 11-13 WCC) were in a pitcher's duel Sunday afternoon and couldn't get their offense to produce enough hits and dropped their series finale 1-0 to Saint Mary's.
The Lions turned to
Jimmy Galicia for the Sunday start and he surrendered a run in the home half of the first before giving way to
Diego Barrera in the bottom of the second. Galicia on the day threw 1 2/3 innings and allowed three hits and two walks and one run.
Barrera was the story for the Lions. He entered the game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second and ended the frame with a groundout and continued to produce for the Lions.
On the afternoon he faced 22 Saint Mary's batters in 5 2/3 innings and only allowed four hits and a walk while striking out three and didn't allow a run keeping the Lions within striking distance.
The Lions offense got singles in the fourth, sixth, and seventh but couldn't follow up those hits with run scoring opportunities.
LMU put together a rally in the visiting half of the eighth when they put a pair on with two outs.
Matthew Piotrowski came up to bat with the pair on and he put a charge into the ball, sending it deep to right field but the park held it and the Lions were retired in the eighth.
The Lions put the tying run on base with two outs in the top of the ninth with
Matt Voelker's single to right center but the game ended with the next at bat as LMU struck out.
Despite the loss, the Lions won their third-straight West Coast Conference series and have won four of their last five weekend series against WCC competition.
LMU will return to Page Stadium for their final three-game home series of the year and face WCC foe Pacific with first pitch set for 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 21st.
