LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (16-25, 9-11 WCC) got tremendous starting pitching from
Matt McClure and timely hitting in the middle and late in the game to take the series win against Santa Clara with their 3-1 victory Saturday night.
McClure drew the Saturday night start, his tenth of the season, and was superb on the bump. He threw five innings of five hit baseball, striking out three while walking one and surrendering a run against 19 Santa Clara batters.
The Lions trailed heading into the bottom of the first but evened the score with the aggressive base running of
Kenny Oyama. He opened up the home half of the first with a walk then stole second and after a few failed pickoff attempts, he swiped third and an errant throw by the catcher brought him home for the tying run.
LMU broke the 1-1 tie in the home half of the fifth with Oyama's double down the left field line scoring
Dylan Dennis who got on earlier in the inning when he worked a seven-pitch walk.
The Lions added some insurance in the bottom of the seventh when
Alex Lambeau scored on the Oyama sacrifice fly putting the game out of reach for the Broncos.
Diego Barrera came on in relief of McClure and was nearly unhittable. He threw three innings of one hit baseball while striking out one.
Matt Voelker came on in the ninth and retired the Broncos in order and picked up his fourth save of the season.
The Lions will go for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon when the series concludes with the Broncos. First pitch between LMU and Santa Clara is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Page Stadium.
