Lions Take Series Opener Over Broncos

LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (15-25, 8-11 WCC) got a quality start from Josh Agnew and insurance runs late in the game to take the first contest in the three-game West Coast Conference series over Santa Clara 5-2 on Friday night.

Agnew made his fifth start of the season and was superb on the hill for the Lions while picking up his fifth win. He gave LMU seven innings of three hit baseball, striking out five and didn't allow a walk against 26 Santa Clara batters.

The Lions found themselves trailing heading into the home half of the second and scored a pair of runs on two Broncos wild pitches.

The first wild pitch scored Alec Cargin who led off the inning with a single and moved over to third on Diego Baqueiro's double. The second wild pitch allowed Baqueiro to score giving the Lions a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

LMU added to their lead in the fifth when Alex Lambeau led off the inning with a double and was brought home by Cargin's RBI sacrifice fly. Cargin went 2-for-3 on the night with an RBI while scoring two runs.

The Lions put the game out of reach in the seventh with a pair of runs courtesy of RBI singles from Matthew Piotrowski and Tommy Delgado. Cargin and Baqueiro both got on with singles to left allowing them to score on the singles from Piotrowski and Delgado.

Holden Christian came on in relief in the eighth and pitched two innings of one hit baseball for his third save of the year.

The Lions and Broncos continue their series tomorrow night when Matt McClure goes opposite Freddie Erlandson. First pitch between the Lions and Broncos is slated for 6:00 p.m.
