Lions Drop Series Finale to Pepperdine

MALIBU – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (14-23, 7-11 WCC) came out of the gate on fire but saw their lead slip away and couldn't recover, dropping their West Coast Conference series finale to Pepperdine 18-4. The Lions took two-of-three over the Waves to win the series but couldn't pull off the sweep.

The Lions picked up right where they left off from yesterday and scored three runs in the first. Kenny Oyama started off the day with a single and was followed by Julian Bury's single putting the pair on. A third straight single, this time by Diego Baqueiro, got the Lions their first run. Alec Cargin continued the scoring with an RBI double and Matthew Piotrowski got the third run in of the frame.

Diego Barrera got the Sunday start and he pitched himself out of a couple of jams in the first and second innings but ran into trouble in the home half of the third. On the day he produced 2 2/3 innings of seven hit baseball while striking out two and giving up six runs.

The Lions found themselves trailing heading into the visiting half of the fourth and that's when Alex Lambeau hit his second homerun of the season.

LMU's first two batters were retired in order when Lambeau stepped to the dish and sent the second pitch he saw over the left field wall for the Lions fourth run of the game. For the day Lambeau went 3-for-3 with the homer, two singles, one RBI, and one run scored.

Adam Christopher had a strong outing in relief for LMU in his 2 1/3 innings of work. Christopher came in relief of Matt Voelker and on the day faced 10 batters and only surrendered two hits.

The Lions return home after their season long eight-game road trip and host Oregon State for a pair and then return to WCC play next weekend against Santa Clara.

The two-game set against the Beavers will mark the seventh Pac-12 school they will play during the 2021 season. First pitch between the Lions and Beavers is slated for Tuesday, April 27th at 6:00 p.m.
