PORTLAND – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (12-21, 5-10 WCC) offense didn't produce enough runs to keep pace with the University of Portland and dropped their West Coast Conference series finale 8-2.
The Lions started off the contest with
Kenny Oyama extending his hitting streak to five games when he singled to the shortstop. He stole second for his team-leading tenth swipe of the year but LMU's bats couldn't get him home ending the first inning threat.
Heading into the visiting half of the fifth the Lions found themselves trailing by four and
Will Grimm started off the inning with a single to right center. With a runner on
Dylan Hirsch hit his first triple of the season scoring Grimm and bringing the Lions closer but that's all they would get in the frame after a pair of strikeouts ended LMU's rally.
Getting the Sunday start for the Lions was
Jimmy Galicia and he produced two innings of five hit baseball while surrendering three runs. LMU's bullpen picked up Galicia and the duo of
Alex Burge and
Matt Voelker combined for the remaining six innings and were responsible for nine hits and five runs.
Matthew Piotrowski started off the Lions seventh with a single and was the first of three straight batters to get on base. With the bags full and one out
Alex Lambeau hit a sacrifice fly to score a run but that's all the Lions would get on the afternoon.
The Lions now turn their attention to a Tuesday night matchup with USC. The Lions and Trojans will meet for the fifth and final time this season after starting the 2021 campaign against each other. The matchup on April 20
th is slated for 6:00 p.m. at Dedeaux Field on the campus of USC.
