PORTLAND – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (12-20, 5-9 WCC) stumbled in the second contest of their three-game series against the University of Portland 9-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions got hits in three of the game's first four innings but couldn't produce any rallies to catch up to Portland, finding themselves down five midway through the contest.
LMU got on the board in the visiting half of the sixth when they loaded the bases and forced in a run when
Alec Cargin was hit by a pitch scoring
Cole Roberts who singled earlier in the inning. With the bases still loaded, the Lions were poised to break through and repeat yesterday's come from behind performance but a strikeout ended the frame and scoring opportunity for LMU.
Getting the starting nod was
Matt McClure and he went 3 1/3 innings giving up five runs on nine hits. Relieving McClure was
Adam Christopher who was solid on the bump in his three innings of work. Christopher didn't allow a hit, while striking out four of the nine Portland batters he faced.
Kenny Oyama went 2-for-3 in the game with a pair of singles to extend his hitting streak to four and bumped up his team-leading batting average to .358 on the year.
The Lions and Pilots wrap up their three-game weekend series tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 pm with the rubber match as LMU is looking to bounce back and claim the series against Portland.
