LOS ANGELES – The No. 11 Loyola Marymount University Lions (3-0, 2-0 WCC) remained unbeaten in 2021, taking down the Gonzaga Bulldogs 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The Lions were the aggressors throughout the match, outshooting the Bulldogs 20-10 with eight of those shots coming on goal resulting in scores for
Steven Anderson and
Gerardo Lopez.
The first 45 minutes of the match didn't result in any goals but the Lions were able to break through in the 66th
minute. Anderson broke the scoreless tie on a shot that found the back of the net on a chance set up by
Noel Caliskan and
Duhaney Williams.
With LMU up a goal, they continued to pressure the Bulldogs and added to their lead in the 82nd
minute when Lopez's ball got past Gonzaga's keeper. Lopez's goal, his first of the season, was assisted by Williams who had two on the day.
LMU's lead was cut in half three minutes later when Gonzaga got a ball past keeper
Jacob Jackson in the 85th
minute. The goal by Gonzaga was the first goal allowed by Jackson on the year.
In the final 15 minutes both the Lions and Bulldogs put up one shot and Jackson turned away Gonzaga's opportunity at an equalizer in the 88th
minute with the second of his two saves on the day.
Ronaldo Brown took a game-high seven shots, two coming on goal while LMU had the advantage in corners 4-1.
The Lions head back out on the road next weekend when they travel to Portland to take on the Pilots on Sunday, March 14 with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m.
