LOS ANGELES – LMU women's water polo completed a perfect day, picking up GCC wins over both Santa Clara and Concordia to move to 3-2 in league play this season. LMU converted 5-of-6 penalty shots to take the first game, 9-8, over Santa Clara. The defense for the Lions then held Concordia to just one second half goal to defeat the Eagles, 11-6.
GAME 1: #19 LMU 9, #22 Santa Clara 8
The Lions jumped ahead 2-0 with a penalty goal by
Alena Sanchez and a powerplay goal by
Ryan-Marie Ickes in the first quarter.
The Broncos opened the second quarter with a goal before Sanchez scored her second of the day to extend the lead to 3-1. Santa Clara scored the final three goals of the half to take a 4-3 lead at intermission.
The visitors pushed ahead by two goals to open the third quarter before
Melyssa Moore scored twice and Sanchez completed her hat trick to take the lead back. The Broncos scored as the buzzer sounded to even the score at 6-all heading into the fourth quarter.
Taylor Enright opened the final period with a go-ahead goal then Sanchez added a fourth to give LMU a two-goal advantage. Santa Clara cut it to a one-goal game with 3:22 to play before
Carolina Newton gave LMU the two-goal lead once again with 1:48 remaining. The Broncos scored the final goal of the game on the ensuing possession, before LMU held on for the 9-8 win.
LMU's two goalkeepers split time with
Elizabeth Bradley making five saves and allowing two goals, while
Madison Davis allowed six goals and made three saves.
Game 2: #19 LMU 11, Concordia 6
The Lions scored the opening two goals once again, as
Tara DeBrabander finished on LMU's opening possession and
Carolina Newton scoring a minute later. Concordia cut into the lead before
Ryan-Marie Ickes converted a powerplay goal. After the Eagles got one back,
Taylor Enright closed out the period with a goal in the final three seconds to extend LMU's advantage to 4-2.
Concordia scored the first two goals of the second period before LMU answered with two of their own as DeBrabander converted a penalty and Newton scored at even strength. The Eagles made it a one-goal game with 1:16 to play until halftime, but LMU again had an answer in the final half minute, Enright added the final goal of the half with 11 seconds to play to give LMU a 7-5 lead.
