LOS ANGELES – The No. 14 Loyola Marymount University Lions (4-0-1, 3-0-1 WCC) were relentless on both sides of the ball and broke through in the 45th
minute which ultimately proved to be the game-winner in a 1-0 result over San Diego.
Early in the first half between the Lions and Toreros only a couple of shots found their way towards either of the goalkeepers as both teams weren't able to get their offenses going.
The Lions weren't deterred and put a pair of shots on goal in the 37th
and 41st
minute but got one to go through the net in the 45th.
Alex Liu scored his first goal of the season when he worked a steal off San Diego and drilled in a shot that turned into the eventual game-winner. The goal by Liu propelled the Lions into the half up by one.
LMU kept up their intensity in the second half outshooting the Toreros 15-1 and having a sizeable advantage in corners 8-2. The Lions had a pair of chances to pick up goals in the 57th
and 70th
minute but
Duhaney Williams and
Bastien Oberli's shots were saved by the Torero keeper.
Jacob Jackson had another clean sheet for LMU, his fourth in the first five games played by the Lions. Jackson and the Lions defense faced a total of four shots in the game. The trio of
Gerardo Lopez,
Nick Dauchot, and
Dylan Shockey have been stout on the defensive end all year and it was evident today in shutting down San Diego.
For the game the Lions outshot San Diego 19-4, had the advantage in shots on goal at 10-0 and corners 11-2.
The Lions homestand continues with another West Coast Conference matchup, when the Pacific Tigers pay a visit to Sullivan Field on Saturday, March 27th
with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m.
