Pepperdine and Azusa Pacific Recap

Women's Swimming

Lions Have Solid Day in the Pool, Shaw on Fire

Results

MALIBU – The Loyola Marymount University Lions women's swim team notched a victory over Azusa Pacific 168-102 and fell to Pepperdine 148-123 on Saturday morning, showing improvement in their times as they approach the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships in three weeks.

Freshman Abigail Shaw continued her winning ways taking both the 50 and 100 freestyle in the first half of the competition. Shaw's winning 50 time of 24.61 shaved a few hundredths off her season best, but her time in the 100 of 53.06, was a lifetime best, dropping over two seconds from the time swam a month ago.  Shaw currently ranks second in the 100 and fourth in the 50 in the PCSC. She later returned to the water for a third race in the 100 Butterfly and was just out-touched by Pepperdine's Haley Bergthold 58.26 to 58.46 for the number one and two spots in the PCSC.

Shaw's freshman teammate, Heidi Ly, also had strong swims in the 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley dropping a couple seconds in each to solidify a Top-8 position heading into next month's conference championships. Ly who placed second in the IM and third in the backstroke, now ranks fifth in the PCSC standing in both events along with a fourth place ranking in the 100 backstroke.  Sophomore Sarah Lu who touched right behind Ly in the 200 back with a season best time, now sits in eighth place in the PCSC rankings.

Yet another freshman, Anna Doherty cracked the PCSC Top 8 rankings, swimming her first ever 1000 freestyle. Doherty placed third in the competition with a time of 11:12.26 that now ranks sixth among PCSC distance swimmers.

The Lions will return to action next weekend when they travel to Santa Barbara and compete against Westmont College on Saturday, March 27th. The meet against the Warriors will be their last one before heading to the PCSC Championships April 14th – 17th.
