ELK GROVE, Calif. – The LMU men's golf team has won back-to-back team titles for the first time since 2006-07, and for the first time in program history has taken home the individual title three tournaments in a row as freshman
Riley Lewis climbed atop the leaderboard to earn his first collegiate tournament.
As a team, the Lions led after the first round but were surpassed by Long Beach State after 36 holes. LMU used a final-round 13-under to jump The Beach and claim a two-stroke victory. The Lions shot 24-under for the tournament with a 276-289-276—840 scorecard to secure the second win in as many events.
The final round 275 was the eight strokes ahead of the second-place team on Tuesday and allowed the Lions to return to the top. LMU shot 63 birdies as a team over the course of the tournament, nine more than Long Beach State's 54.
Coming off a runner-up finish a week ago, Lewis earned his first collegiate victory on Tuesday, shooting 64-72-69—205. The opening round 64, highlighted by nine birdies, is a career-low round for the freshman. Lewis finished with 15 total birdies, a tie for the most in the 90-player field, and did not shoot over par at all in the final round.
Gavin Cohen earned his fourth top-3 finish of the season, tying for third at 69-68-70—207. Cohen finished two strokes behind his teammate and did his best work on Par 5 holes where he finished 8-under par.
The next pair of Lions each tied for ninth overall.
Cameron Meeks claimed his third top-10 finish of the year with a 71-76-67—214, while
Kyle Kinnane earned his second top-10 finish of the year after shooting 72-73-69—214.
Caden McMackin rounded out the five for the Lions, tying for 70
th at 81-77-71—229.
LMU's next scheduled tournament is Apr. 4-5 in Phoenix, Ariz. For Wyoming's Cowboy Classic.
