SANTA CLARA – The No. 15 Loyola Marymount University Lions (2-0, 1-0 WCC) picked up their first West Coast Conference win Sunday afternoon 3-0 over Santa Clara.
Steven Anderson,
Noel Caliskan, and
Duhaney Williams scored goals for the Lions in the 43', 53', and 84' minute which proved to be too much for the Broncos.
LMU, preseason favorites to win the WCC, showed why they're favored to take home the conference crown. They were the aggressors throughout and kept pressure on the Broncos all afternoon. The Lions had 14 shots with eight on goal and held Santa Clara to just seven shots with two coming on goal, both stopped by
Jacob Jackson.
Caliskan punched in his first goal of the season and added two assists. His big day was accompanied by both Anderson's and Williams' first goals of the season.
The Lions were close for much of the first half but finally broke through in the 43rd
minute.
Derek Goodman worked a good give and go to Caliskan in the box and while a Bronco defender got a head on it, he couldn't clear it giving Anderson the opportunity and he took advantage by putting the ball in the back of the net.
Caliskan added to the Lions goal total in the 53rd
minute. He took a cross from Anderson in the box and sent it straight to the back of the net.
Williams put the final LMU goal in net in the 84th
minute on a breakaway and they never looked back.
Jackson recorded his second straight shutout for the Lions and has looked incredibly sharp while in net.
The Lions return to Sullivan Field on Sunday, March 7 to face Gonzaga with game time set for 1:00 p.m.
