LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (4-3, 0-0 WCC) swept the three-game series over Utah behind tremendous pitching from
Matt McClure and timely hitting in the fifth and seventh innings to take the 4-1 decision.
McClure, appearing in his third game of the season, scattered four hits over six innings to go along with six strikeouts. He had the Utah batters guessing all day and at one point retired eight straight. He was able to shake off hits by Utah in the first, second, and fifth innings and pitched his way out of a jam in the sixth to preserve his first win of the season.
The Lions had chances to put runs on the board, loading the bases in the third and fourth innings but finally pushed through in the fifth. Again, with the bases loaded
Dylan Dennis took a Utah offering off the shoulder forcing in the game's first run.
Ben Grunberg then smacked a single to put the Lions up a pair and they never looked back.
LMU got another pair of runs in the seventh to push the lead to four and then surrendered one in the ninth for the score to finally settle at 4-1.
Kenny Oyama had a big day for LMU, going 3-for-3 and scoring a run. He was menacing at the plate all day and his three bunt singles were placed perfectly in the field every time.
Diego Baqueiro had another solid outing for the Lions going 2-for-4 with a double. Baqueiro has gotten off to a red hot start and continues to be a threat whenever he steps into the box.
The Lions now head north to face Washington for a four-game series starting with a doubleheader on Friday. The first game of the double dip is slated for 1:00 p.m.
