LOS ANGELES – LMU women's soccer opened conference play in exciting fashion. For the second straight game, the Lions (1-0-1, 1-0-0 WCC) came from behind to force overtime, only to earn a 2-1 win this time around over Portland (1-1-0, 0-1-0 WCC) to earn the first career victory for head coach
Jenny Bindon.
Following a scoreless first half, the Pilots found the back of the net first with a 64
th minute goal.
Similar to opening day,
Madison Thomas provided the response that would force overtime. Thomas scored the equalizer for her second goal in as many games off the assist by
Abby Stewart.
The 68
th minute goal leveled the game at 1-1 and put both teams into overtime looking for their first result of conference.
After two off-target shots by Portland, LMU earned a corner kick.
Skylar Robledo swung the ball into play and
Sierra Dunphy pushed it towards goal where
Siarfo Abekah was ready to punch in the game winner right in front of net in the 95
th minute of play.
The overtime win is LMU's first extra time victory since the 2015 Sweet Sixteen season when the Lions knocked off Pepperdine 1-0 in overtime in the final game of the regular season. LMU snaps an 18-game winless streak when the game goes past 90 minutes.
The win is also the first for Bindon, who stays unbeaten in her first two games leading the Lions.
LMU will remain at home for the next two weeks, facing San Diego on Feb. 27 and BYU on Mar. 6.
