Lions Earn Senior Day Win in Final Home Match

LOS ANGELES – The #6 LMU men's water polo team evened its record on Friday afternoon with a non-conference home win over #10 San Jose State (0-2). The Lions (4-4, 1-1 WWPA) picked up a 15-6 win in the penultimate game of the regular season.
 
Jonny Rimlinger opened the scoring at the 5:16 mark of the first quarter, before the Spartans ultimately tied the score at one. LMU pushed ahead in the final half minute, with goals by Jack Dunbar and Rimlinger pushed the Lions ahead, 3-1, after eight minutes.
 
San Jose State cut it to a one-goal game early in the second period but again LMU responded to close out the half. Joseph Shaw scored off a goalie pass and Luke Chandler buried a penalty shot to make it a 5-2 game at intermission.
 
The third quarter was all Lions as LMU outscored San Jose State 6-1 in the quarter. Joseph Cavazos scored a minute and a half into the period and added a powerplay at the 4:26 mark to extend LMU's lead to 7-2. The Spartans got one back before Daniel Roth, Cavazos, Shaw, and Rimlinger closed out the period.
 
A pair of freshmen scored goals in the game, as both Augie Renezeder and Alex Marlow finished past the goalie. Makoa Gutierrez scored his first career goal for LMU, and Shaw completed his hat trick in his final home game of his career.
 
Robert Halligan recorded a career-high 18 saves in his 32 minutes in the cage, and added two assists and three steals.
 
Following the game Robert Halligan, Rylan Russell, Nicolaus Rimlinger, Joseph Shaw, Jack Baumgardner, Matthew Knoedler, Scott Thomas, and Daniel Roth were all recognized after playing their final home game at Burns Aquatics Center.
