PROVO, Utah – The Loyola Marymount University volleyball team battled No. 12 Brigham Young University in its second game of week, but the Lions couldn't take home the win, falling to the Cougars 3-0 in Provo, Utah.
The Cougars opened set one with a 3-0 run, and extended their lead after a 7-0 run and took set one 25-17.
Down 1-0, the Lions gained momentum in set two, putting the first two points of the set on the board, starting with a kill from
Kari Geissberger. The Lions held onto the lead for almost the first half of the set, but then the Cougars went on a 4-0 run to tie things up at 12-12. There were three lead changes and 13 tied scores. The Lions and the Cougars tied things up all the way until 25-25, but then BYU won the set 27-25.
Another neck and neck set, the Lions continued to battle in set three. There were five lead changes and 10 tied scores. A run from the Cougars gave BYU its third set win, 25-23 to take the match.
Rose Booth led the team in kills with 10, while
Audrey Klemp had eight.
Isabella Bareford led the team in assists, tallying 30 of the Lions' 33 total. Bareford also led the team in service aces with four.
The Lions had four total team blocks, with three block assists coming from
Emmelyn Walters, and three from Geissberger.
Mary Shroll led the team in digs with 12.
The Lions will be back on the road next week to take on Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash.
