Three Lions Named to All-WCC Teams

LOS ANGELES- The Loyola Marymount University softball team has been ranked No. 2 in the 2021 WCC Softball Preseason Coaches Poll. The Coaches Poll and Preseason All-WCC team were selected solely by a vote of the conference's six head coaches.

"We're ready for the opportunity to get back on the field and compete," said head coach Tairia Flowers. "Even though it will all look a little different this year, this is a first for many of us as Lions and our first games as a team. The goal is to get better each time we step on the field."

Andrea Gonzalez and Molly Grumbo have been placed on the 2021 All-WCC Softball Team Position Players list. Gonzalez is going into her junior year at third base and Grumbo will also be going into her junior year at catcher.

Last season, Grumbo went .529 at the plate and was just one of two Lions to hit a triple, and led the WCC in batting average, while Gonzalez was third on the team in batting average, finishing her 2020 season at .351. Gonzalez had a team high of six doubles and five home runs.

Linnay Wilson has been placed on the 2021 All-WCC Pre-season Softball Team for Pitchers. Wilson will be going into her junior year at pitcher for LMU. Wilson tallied up six wins last season, and led the Lions to two upsets, including, a shutout over No. 4 LSU and No. 13 Michigan.

The Lions were unable to compete in conference play last season due to cancellations, but held a 13-10 record overall in their pre-season play.

The Lions will host Cal Poly for their home opener on February 12th at Smith Field. They defeated Cal Poly last season 13-3 on the road. The Lions will also face nationally ranked teams including Oregon and UCLA in their pre-season schedule.

WCC play begins on April 10th, as the Lions hit the road facing No. 6 ranked Santa Clara. The Lions first WCC home game will follow on April 17th as they take on the No. 4 ranked team, San Diego at Smith Field.

The Lions face the No. 1 WCC ranked team BYU on May 1st at Smith Field.
