Fourth Quarter Surge, Mark’s Career High Boards, Propel Lions to Victory

FULLERTON, Calif. - The LMU Women's Basketball team knocked off the Cal State Fullerton Titans 64-51, on the road, after a late fourth quarter surge and a rebounding clinic by Alexis Mark. The sophomore forward notched her new career high with 16 boards, putting her in the top five all-time in LMU history.

It was a tight contest through the first five minutes as both squads found their way to the cup consistently. With just under four and a half minutes to go in the first, Ariel Johnson scored four straight points in less than 30 seconds, opening a small run for the Lions.

Nicole Rodriguez gave the Lions a boost from downtown, knocking down her first three of the evening. Rodriguez would finish with a team high three triples, shooting 50% from behind the arc.

Khari Clark was dominant in the second, scoring nine of the Lion's 15 points, including a bench igniting three point play. Clark helped the Lions control the paint, a place that the team put up 38 of their 64 points.

After a few traded buckets, the Lions entered the locker room with a 32-24 lead.

Out of the locker room, the Titans stormed back on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to just two. With 5:56 left in the third, the Lion's 8 point lead had been eliminated and bringing the score to 34 a piece. For every bucket LMU scored, Fullerton had an answer, tying the game up twice more before Rodriguez sank her third three to put the Lions ahead by one.

The seven point swing the Lion's weathered in the third did not faze them. Right away, Johnson and Cassandra Gordon sprung the Lions back to a five point lead, one the Titans would challenge, but could not overcome down the stretch.

With 3:35 left in the game, Jasmine Jones dropped two buckets and opened the floodgates on an 11-0 run for the Lions. After a bucket from Johnson, Kimora Sykes hit a dagger from downtown, just about ending the Titans' hope of a comeback.

Mark and Johnson sealed the deal from the line, going a combined 5-6, as the Titans played the foul game. Fittingly, Mark grabbed one last board off a desperation three from the Titans, adding an exclamation point to her career night.

The win brings the Lions to an even .500 in non-conference play and sends them off to WCC action on a three game winning streak. The Lions also became the first WCC opponent to defeat the Titans, as Cal State Fullerton were previously a perfect 2-0 on the season.

After a brief Christmas break, the Lions will return home to open conference play against Portland and Gonzaga, the number two and three ranked teams, respectively, in the WCC. The Pilots come to Gersten on Dec. 30 for a 5pm tip-off, and the Zags will follow on Jan. 1 with a 12pm game.
