Lions Women and Men Place Seventh at WCC Championships

CONCORD, CA. – The Loyola Marymount University Lions Men's and Women's Cross Country teams traveled to Concord, California to compete in the 2021 West Coast Conference Championships. In a championship that featured three nationally ranked teams and six regionally ranked teams in total, both LMU squads scored 191 points for 7th place. 
 
The women's team was led by the trio of Lilly Schmidt, Samantha Barajas, and Claire Graves. Schmidt's time of 21:53.9 was good for 28th overall, followed by Barajas at 22:02.9 for 31st place and Graves who placed 45th with her time of 22:41.5. Freshman Anastasia Russell was the fourth Lion to finish with her time of 23:03.7, placing at 54th followed by Avery Doan with a time of 23:42.9 for 68th place. Marina Soares placed 72nd in 23:49.7, Kaitlyn Childress placed 77th in 24:20.0 and Shelby Page placed 80th in 24:25.9.
 
"I am proud of the way we battled today. Claire Graves really stepped up for us and ran tough despite battling injury for most of the season," said Women's Team Head Coach Chloe Curtis.
 
The Lion men were led by the trio of Estanis Ruiz, Roberto Ruelas, and Miguel Barrera-Lopez. The top finisher for LMU, Ruiz ran the 8k course in 24:53.2 for 35th place. He was followed by the duo of Ruelas at 25:10.8, good for 40th overall and Barrera-Lopez at 25:15.7 for 42nd place. Zach Arias was the next Lion to finish at 25:57.3, placing 54th overall and Ethan Frisone rounded out the Lions' scoring five at 25:57.3 for 55th place.
 
Max Smith was the next LMU runner to finish the race, coming in at 66th place with his time of 26:31.2. Right behind Smith was Cooper McCarthy in 67th with a time of 26:38.8 followed by Shane Ely at 70th in 26:56.3 and Miles Gillan rounding out LMU's runners in 78th in 27:41.3.
 
"We didn't have our best day as a team today and we are looking ahead to Regionals to see what we can do," said Men's Team Head Coach Jason Zarb-Cousin.
 
The Lions next test on the course will come in two weeks at the NCAA Division I West Regionals on Friday, November 12th in Sacramento, California.
