Cross Country Women's Recruiting Class 2020

Men's Cross Country

LMU Women’s Cross Country Welcomes Six New Lions to the 2020 Squad

Sophia Cortina, Maya Kalach, Shelby Page, Lilly Schmidt, Haley Schmitt and Stella Skovborg will begin their first season in the LMU jersey this fall.

Coach Scott Guerrero quote:
"I am eager to welcome six newcomers to the Lion family this fall. This is a talented, hungry, and enthusiastic group that will certainly make an immediate impact. We have had tremendous success with transfer students in the past, and this year we welcome three – Lilly Schmidt, a two-time top-75 Regional finisher in cross country and graduate transfer from UCLA, Sophia Cortina, the reigning Junior College CA State Cross Country Champion from Moorpark College, and Maya Kalach, a sophomore from Temple University. We've also added three true freshmen with tremendous potential – Stella Skovborg, a standout from Oregon, Shelby Page from San Jose, and Haley Schmitt from New Hampshire. We do not yet know exactly what this fall will look like, but I hope we get the chance to compete so that these newcomers can show you what they are capable of. Go Lions!"

"I chose LMU because with the combination of encouraging coaches, a genuinely good team, and a student-oriented learning environment, I see myself thriving there."

Coach Guerrero:
"Sophia is the reigning Junior College State Champion, coming to us from Moorpark College. She will be joining her former teammate, Samantha Barajas, who transferred to LMU from Moorpark in 2019. Sophia is an extremely driven athlete, and will make an immediate impact for us. We can't wait to see what she can do as a Lion!"

Maya on why she chose LMU:
"I chose LMU because it made me believe that dream schools do exist. The combination of a strong academic opportunity, down to earth coaching staff, and passionate, united team is not something you can find everywhere, and I am lucky to have found it at LMU."

Coach Guerrero:
"Maya comes to us as a transfer from Temple University in Philadelphia. Originally from Bellevue, Washington, Maya competed for Interlake High School and was a 3-time state qualifier in Cross Country. Maya's drive and enthusiasm will make a great addition to our team. She has loads of potential and we are looking forward to helping her improve."

Coach Guerrero:
"Shelby is a dedicated athlete and we see lots of untapped potential in her. She competed for Leigh High School in San Jose, and was looking forward to a breakthrough track season before the COVID-19 cancellation. We can't wait to see what she can do!"

"I chose LMU because the coaches and LMU staff made me feel very supported and willing to help me achieve my athletic and academic goals."

Coach Guerrero:
"Lilly will make a tremendous addition to our team. As a graduate transfer, she brings experience and leadership. She has finished 73rd and 62nd in the West Region the past 2 years while at UCLA, so we know she will make an immediate competitive impact in Cross Country. She has run 9:55.83 for 3,000m, and 4:33.61 for 1500m and on the track, which would rank her #9 and #11, respectively, on the LMU all-time lists.
