Lions Complete Series Sweep of Spartans

The Loyola Marymount University Lions baseball team (8-8, 0-0 WCC) put runs on the board in six of the games nine innings and came away with the series sweep of the San Jose State University Spartans by taking the third contest 7-2 on Sunday afternoon.

Sean Paquet got his fourth start and first win of the season (1-1), giving head coach Nathan Choate five innings of five hit baseball allowing two runs and two walks while striking out six.

LMU got on the board right from the onset, loading the bases in the top of the first and bringing in the game's first run on a walk. The Lions loaded the bases on a Trevin Esquerra walk, a Matt Voelker double and a Dylan Dennis walk which brought up Alex Lambeau who drew the walk for the run.

With the game tied at one in the top of the third LMU picked up a pair of runs with Esquerra being sent home on the Dennis sac fly and Voelker coming home on the Cole Roberts groundout to short. Esquerra got on base with a walk and Voelker singled up the middle for his second hit of the game.

LMU put up runs in the fourth, fifth, six and eighth to pull away from San Jose giving them a five run advantage they would not relinquish.

Leading the Lions offense was the trio of Cooper Uhl, Voelker and Lambeau. Uhl went 2-for-6 with a double and run scored. Voelker was solid at the dish for the Lions going 3-for-5 with a double and a pair of runs scored. Not to be outdone Lambeau went 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs.

The Lions bullpen put the game out of reach working their way out of jams in the bottom of the seventh and eighth and eventually shutting the door on the Spartans in the ninth to preserve the victory.

LMU now heads into West Coast Conference play next weekend when they travel to Provo, Utah for a three-game set against BYU. The Lions and Cougars will begin the set on Thursday, March 12 with first pitch set for 5:00 p.m. PDT.
