The Loyola Marymount University Lions baseball team's (3-4, 0-0 WCC) offense produced three runs on the day but couldn't overcome miscues on the field and dropped their second straight game to Sam Houston State 5-3.
Â
The Lions turned to righty
Nick Frasso (0-1) on Saturday and the junior gave head coach
Nathan Choate 4 2/3 innings of nine hit baseball. He struck out six on the day but gave up four runs, three earned, against 23 Bearkats batters before his night was over.Â
Â
LMU began the night by putting a pair of runners on but couldn't produce the game's first run as a couple of fly outs ended the threat in the top of the first. The Lions then had a pair of seeing eyed singles get past the defense and the game's first miscue which led to the Bearkats taking a one-run lead.Â
Â
The Lions took their first lead of the night soon after in the top of the second after
Steven Chavez reached on an error by the Bearkats. He moved around the bases courtesy of a walk and a pass ball and eventually came home on
Dylan Hirsch's sacrifice fly. With a man in scoring position
Kenny Oyama singled to right field plating
Alex Lambeau and the Lions were in business with a one-run lead.Â
Â
Entering the bottom half of the second the Lions allowed a runner to go into scoring position after Frasso's failed pickoff attempt. With the runner on second the Bearkats took advantage and brought him home off a double down the left field line. The Lions were able to get out of a bases loaded jam when Frasso got Colten Cowser to strike out looking.Â
Â
The Lions and Bearkats were tied heading into the bottom of the fifth but a two-run inning proved to be the difference. LMU closed to within one-run in the top of the sixth when the red hot
Cooper Uhl singled in
Trevin Esquerra for the RBI but gave the run right back in the bottom half.Â
Â
Alex Burge, who came on in relief of Frasso, failed in his pickoff attempt of a Bearkat runner on second and he found his way home when the ball couldn't get out of Hirsch's glove putting another run on the board for the Bearkats.Â
Â
The Lions managed to put runners on in the seventh and eighth but couldn't produce another run and went down in order in the ninth to end the game in favor of Sam Houston.
Â
LMU and SHSU will play the third game of the three-game set tomorrow afternoon with the Lions looking to get the Sunday victory. First pitch at Don Sanders Stadium is set for 11:00 a.m. PT.  Â
