MALIBU, Calif., -- The Loyola Marymount University women's basketball team won its first road game over the Pepperdine in three years on Saturday, as the team pulled off an impressive 84-77 win in Malibu, led by
Chelsey Gipson.

The Lions set the tone early in the first quarter, as the first three baskets made were three-pointers, the first one from
Naomi Yim, the second from
Chelsey Gipson, which gave the Lions the lead and then one from
Aspyn Adams too extend the lead. The Waves tied things up at 11-11, but they were never able to take the lead. The Lions closed out the first up 21-13.
LMU kept its momentum going in the second quarter, taking its first double-digit lead of the game. The Waves were able to tie things up at 34-34, but they weren't able to take the lead. The Lions closed out the half up 37-36.
The Waves opened up the quarter with a jumper, which gave them the lead, the Lions took their lead back, and then the teams continued to battle back and forth. The Lions were able to tie things up at 50-50, and then LMU took the lead and ended the quarter up 61-58.
The Lions fought in the fourth and extended the lead to double-digits, Pepperdine responded and came within three points, but the Lions never gave up their lead. With less than two minutes left, the Waves came within a point, but a layup from Jones and then two made free throws from CiCi Ellington and Adams secured the win for the Lions. LMU came out on top 84-77, giving the team their first road win since 2017.
Gipson led the Lions in points with 23, while Ellington had 18 and
Raychel Stanley had 16.
Jasmine Jones led the Lions in rebounds with 10, and Ellington had seven. Ellington and Gipson both had three assists a piece, while Adams and Gipson had two steals a piece.
The Lions shot 51.7 percent from the field and 57.9 percent from behind the arch, compared to the Waves' 41 percent and 38.9 percent. LMU had 41 total rebounds, while Pepperdine had 44. Both teams had 14 assists.
Up next: The Lions will be back on the road next week to take on Portland on Thursday and Gonzaga on Saturday.
