Two Lions Earn Double-Doubles in Win Over SCU

LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University women's basketball team completed a weekend sweep, as the team pulled off a 75-59 win over Santa Clara in Gersten Pavilion.

"We are finally starting to put things together, there was so many contributions by so many different people," said head coach Charity Elliott. "I thought CiCi really set the tone, coming out with a great mindset. Jasmine Jones came up big with her free-throws."

LMU vs. SCU 75-59

Raychel Stanley went on a 6-2 run to open the first quarter, but the Broncos responded, as they tied things up at 10-10, and then took the lead, leaving the first up 18-10.

The Lions turned things around second quarter, as the team went on an 11-2 run to take their lead back. The teams battled it out the rest of the quarter and although the Lions outscored the Broncos 15-8 in the second, LMU left the half only trailing by one point; 26-25.

LMU took the lead right away to open the third after a made layup but Stanley. SCU took the lead back, but the Lions responded, taking the lead back and holding onto it for the rest of the quarter, ending the third on top 46-43.

The Lions continued to battle in the fourth, never allowing the Broncos to tie or take the lead. LMU took its first double-digit lead about halfway through the quarter, and then continued to extend the lead for the remainder of the fourth. Jasmine Jones made four straight free-throws to end the game with a 75-59 win over Santa Clara.

Jones led the team in points with 21, while also leading in rebounds with 13, earning her sixth double-double of the season. Jones also went 10-12 at the line and had four assists. CiCi Ellington earned her first double-double of the season after scoring 18 points and putting up 11 rebounds.

Stanley and Gipson also scored in the double-digits, Gipson with 10 and Stanley with 15. Laura Vaida led the team in blocks with three, while Gipson had three steals.

The Lions shot 45 percent from the field and 38 percent from behind the arch, compared to the Broncos' 30 and 26. LMU shot 72 percent from the line, while SCU shot 58. LMU had 44 total rebounds, seven total blocks and 10 steals.

"I am so proud of this team because they fight. We have been battling some adversity and they have responded really well this entire weekend. Big steps, our whole mindset is to just keep getting better," said Elliott.

Up next: The Lions will head down the road to Pepperdine University next Saturday for the PCH Cup.
