The #24 Loyola Marymount University Lions men's soccer team (5-2-1) dropped their second game of the season in overtime 2-1 against the Cal Poly Mustangs on Thursday night. The Lions got a goal from
CJ Neville but were unable to produce any other scoring leading to their second defeat of the season.
Â
The Lions had six shots in the first half and led the Mustangs in corners 4-1 but a red card to
Narciso Cervantes in the 29
th minute left LMU a man down for the rest of the match.Â
Â
LMU's
Jacob Jackson was strong in goal once again for head coach
Paul Krumpe, turning away the Mustangs until the 42
nd minute when a shot by Cal Poly was deflected and found its way into the back of the net. Jackson's school record consecutive scoreless minutes streak was snapped at 601 minutes with the Mustangs goal.Â
Â
The Lions, finding themselves trailing for the first time in six games, didn't waste a single minute in getting the equalizer against the Mustangs. In the 43
rd minute Neville ran past the Mustang defenders and when the goalie tried to clear the ball it deflected off of him for the Lions goal. The goal, Neville's second of the season, sent both teams into the half tied at one apiece.Â
Â
LMU played on the defensive end for most of the second half trailing in shots 9-1 and corners 5-1. The Lions defense was solid the entire second half, turning away every scoring opportunity the Mustangs put up and after 90 minutes the score remained tied at one.
Â
Heading into the first overtime period the Mustangs put up a shot against Jackson, who made the save, but on the rebound Cal Poly was able to punch in the game winning goal pushing them past the Lions 2-1.
Â
The Lions will now play the final game of their season-long four game road trip Sunday night when they travel to Fullerton and take on the #13 Cal State Fullerton Titans on Sept. 29 with kickoff set for 5:00 p.m.Â
