INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Loyola Marymount University volleyball team (6-6) split on its final Day of the Butler Bulldog Brawl, as the team fell to No. 19 Illinois 3-1 Saturday morning, and then beat Butler 3-1 Saturday afternoon.
LMU vs. No. 19 Illinois – 24-26, 25-17, 25-14, 25-11
The Lions opened up the morning against the Fighting Illini, where LMU came out strong in the first set. A service ace from
Tess Reid put the Lions on the board, giving the Lions an early lead. Illinois was only able to take the lead once, but the Lions took it right back, while there were four lead changes. Nearing the end of the set, Illinois had the lead at 24-22 until
Rose Booth scored a point for the Lions, making it a one-point set. A kill by
Meredith Teague tied things up at 24-24, and then an attack error by Illinois would give the Lions the lead. Up 25-24, a bad set from Illinois would secure the set for LMU.
Up 1-0, the Lions struggled to maintain momentum in set two, as Illinois went on a 7-1 run to open the set. The Lions weren't able to take the lead or tie things up, dropping set two 25-17.
Tied 1-1, the Lions went into the third set, where Illinois went on a 5-0 run to open the third. The Lions weren't able to take a lead or tie things up, falling 25-14 in set three, and then dropping set four 25-11, losing the match 3-1 to Illinois.
Booth led the team in kills with 12, while
Savannah Slattery had 11. Rice had 10 digs, while Slattery had nine. Reid put up 28 of the Lions' 41 assists.
LMU vs. Butler 25-17, 25-20, 24-26, 25-12
Down 1-0 on the day, while split at 1-1 at the tournament, the Lions turned their momentum around for their final match of the day, as the team picked up a 3-1 win over Butler.
Butler put the first two points on the board, but the Lions quickly responded, starting with a kill from
Megan Rice. An attack error from the Bulldogs tied things up, and then the Lions took the lead and maintained it for the rest of the set. Two service aces in a row from Teague gave the Lions their 25-17 set one win.
The Lions maintained their momentum in set two, putting the first two points on the board. Butler was able to tie things up five times and take one lead, but a kill by Teague secured the set for the Lions at 25-20.
Up 2-0, the Lions struggled throughout the third set, as they were neck and neck with Butler. Butler opened up the set with two points, taking the first lead. The score was tied nine times and there were four lead changes. LMU fought until the end, as the teams were tied at 24-24, but Butler took the set on a service ace.
After losing set three 26-24, the Lions regained their momentum, opening up set four with a 5-0 run, starting with a kill from Booth. The Bulldogs weren't able to tie things up or take a lead over the Lions, giving LMU a quick 25-12 win, securing the match.
Booth led the team in kills with 18, while Slattery had 16. Reid had 48 of LMU's 54 assists, while
Bo Culo led the team in digs with 17. The Lions had 11 total blocks, while Butler had 12.5.
Culo and Booth were two of seven athletes named to the Butler Bulldog Brawl All Tournament Team.
Up next: The Lions will open up conference play at home, as the team will host Santa Clara on Thursday in their home-opener, and San Francisco on Saturday.
