Lions Open Up Butler University Tournament With a Sweep

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Loyola Marymount University volleyball team (5-5) opened up the Butler University Tournament with a sweep Friday afternoon, as the defeated Belmont University 3-0. 
 
LMU vs. Belmont – 25-13, 25-15, 25-18 
The Lions opened up set one with a 4-1 run, starting with a kill from Tess Reid. The Bruins were only able to tie things up twice, but never took a lead. Tied at 8-8, Rose Booth scored a point for the Lions and they held onto the lead for the rest of the match, picking up a quick 25-13.
 
Up 1-0, the Bruins put the first point on the board, taking their only lead of the set. The Lions quickly tied things up after Meredith Teague scored a point, the Lions took the lead after an attack error. LMU took its first double-digit lead of the set at 20-10, after Belmont made an attack error. Teague closed out the set for the Lions after scoring the 25 point for the Lions, winning the set 25-15. 
 
With just one more set to win, Savannah Slattery and Sierra Bartley opened up the third set with kills, giving the Lions the lead that the maintained all set. Belmont was able to get within one point of the Lions, but the Bruins were not able to tie things up. An attack error from Belmont would secure the match for the Lions, picking up their third sweep of the season. 
 
Slattery led the team in kills with 12, while having a .524 hitting percentage. Booth and Emmelyn Walters both had eight kills. Teague led the team in hitting percentage with .833. Reid put up 20 of the team's 38 assists, while Bo Culo led the team in digs with 11. The Lions had four total blocks compared to Belmont's three. 
 
Up next: The Lions will be back on the court on Saturday to take on No. 19 Illinois at 6 AM, and will conclude the tournament against Butler University at 4:00 PM.
