Lions Shine at Cougar Classic

The Loyola Marymount University men's and women's cross country teams got their first look at the NCAA West Regional site when they competed in the Cougar Classic at Colfax Golf Club in Colfax, Washington on Friday night.
 
The Lions took a total of 16 runners up to the event, six for the women's team and 10 on the men's side to compete against runners from all over the west region.
 
The women got the event started with the Lions redshirt senior Kyla Danforth putting together a tremendous performance out on the course. Danforth was the first Lion to cross the finish line and second runner overall posting a time of 21:21.8, just five seconds off her collegiate best.
 
Danforth was followed by Hannah Wohlenberg who crossed the finish line at 22:23.2, good for 24thoverall. Ann Kelly, following up her strong outing at the Biola Invitational, came in at a time of 22:43.8 and was quickly followed by Gabriela Hernandez who posted a personal best time of 22:48.0. Rounding out the top five finishers for the Lions was Raina Hines with a time of 23:11.8. Danforth and the rest of the Lion women posted strong finishes propelling them to fourth overall as a team with a score of 132 points.
 
On the men's side the Lions came into the event ranked 12th in the West Region and the first LMU runner to cross the finish line was Max Smith who posted a personal best time of 25:10.1 placing him at 24thoverall. Smith was followed by Joseph Garcia who clocked in at a time of 25:22.7, making him the second Lion to cross the line. Freshman Cooper McCarthy was the third Lion to finish the race with a personal best time of 25:34.4.
 
The final two runners making up the top five finishers for the Lions were Simeon Paul, who took a tumble in the first mile but got back up and ran a time of 25:37.8 and Zach Arias with a time of 25:41.3. The Lions as a team came home with a fourth-place overall finish with a score of 137.
 
The Lions will take a week away from the course before they head back into competition with the Capital Cross Challenge at Arcade Creek Golf Course in Sacramento on Sept. 28.
