PULLMAN, Wash. – LMU scored in the 69
th minute to cut their deficit in half, but Texas Tech proved to be too much throughout and took the game, 3-1, to open the Cougar Cup.
The two schools played on the neutral field to open the weekend's games. The Red Raiders, who are receiving votes in the latest national Top-25 poll scored the opening goal in the 25
th minute to take a first half lead.
The score line remained the same until Texas Tech doubled their advantage with a 54
th minute goal.
Siarfo Abekah cut into the deficit by finishing a cross from
Skylar Robledo in the 69
th minute. Abekah's first career goal made it a 2-1 game with just over 20 minutes to play.
With the field opening up, the Red Raiders were able to capitalize and add in an 84
th minute finish to secure the 3-1 victory.
LMU had more chances in the second half, outshooting their opponents, 5-3, in the second 45 minute stretch.
Ali King and
Olivia LaCasto led the way with two shots apiece, accounting for half of the team's total.
Lee Erickson played the first half in goal for the Lions and recorded two saves.
Sadie Kenny came on at halftime and played the remainder of the game for her longest appearance of her young career.
The Lions return to Lower Soccer Field on the WSU campus on Sunday at 1 p.m. to play the hosts. The Cougars rank 13
th in the nation and will be playing Michigan in Friday's night cap.
