PITTSBURGH, Penn – Both LMU (0-1-1) and Duquesne (0-1-1) converted a penalty kick in regulation off a goalkeeper foul in the box to earn a 1-1 double overtime tie on Sunday morning. The Lions answered a first half deficit with a converted penalty equalizer in the final minute of regulation.
"I am proud of our resilience today," said Head Coach
Michelle Myers. "To go down on a PK call early and then have chances slip away it would have been easy to fold. But we kept fighting and pushing and got a PK call in our favor with 40 seconds left in regulation. Freshman
Amber McCorkle stepped up to take it under the pressure and put it away. We missed some chances today which we have to convert but we defended well and limited their chances which was an improvement from Friday. We used a lot of players today due to the quick turnaround from Friday and was happy with everyone's effort. Now we look to recover and prepare for our home opener on Thursday against San Jose St."
In the 23
rd minute, Duquesne's Deena DeBaldo took the ball on the counter attack and released a shot off target. After the ball left her foot, she and
Lee Erickson collided and a penalty kick was awarded. DeBaldo took her team's PK and gave the Dukes a first half 1-0 lead.
Despite 11 shots in regulation, and 16 total in the game for the Lions, LMU was unable to find the back of the net in the run of play. With a minute to play in the second half, LMU earned a deep throw-in on the attack.
Jalyn Lupo played a long throw into the box and after it was headed onto the far side of the net, where
Skylar Robledo recovered it and was promptly fouled by the Duquesne goalkeeper.
The Lions earned a penalty kick with 39 seconds left and sent freshman
Amber McCorkle to the spot with a chance to tie the game. McCorkle buried the set piece and evened the score.
The Dukes quickly responded with an attack off the ensuing free kick. The Lions were able to draw the home side offside just 14 seconds after the equalizer goal, negating what would have been a game-winning goal and forcing overtime.
The extra periods remained scoreless and LMU earned their first draw of the season.
LMU earned nine corner kicks on the day, compared to six from Duquesne.
Lee Erickson recorded a season-high four saves to earn the point.
The Lions make their home debuts with a pair of games this upcoming week. LMU hosts San Jose State on Thursday at 7 p.m., then welcomes Penn State on Sept. 1 for the first game of the WCC/Big 10 Challenge.
